Vince Aletti takes us inside his New York East Village home, where decades of photographs, books, magazines and collected ephemera live side by side. A critic, curator and lifelong collector, Aletti has spent much of his life looking at, writing about and gathering photography, building what he calls a “collection of collections”. As part of our ongoing collaboration with Vince, Acne Studios revisits Bruce of Los Angeles: Rodeo, a series of photographs from his archive, with a new edition published by Acne Studios alongside an exhibition at Acne Paper Palais Royal.

Published by Acne Studios and edited by Vince Aletti, the second edition of Bruce of Los Angeles: Rodeo brings together the photographer’s most personal work, revealing images that transcend fantasy to offer a subtler, more complex view of modern masculinity. Bruce of Los Angeles is one of a number of photographers based in LA who photographed the male nude starting in the late ‘40s and ‘50s. The photographs in Rodeo were captured during his travels to rodeos across Arizona, California, Oregon, Canada and elsewhere throughout the American West. Rather than directing professional models, he turned his attention to working cowboys and rodeo riders, photographing them exactly as he encountered them – relaxed, confident and entirely themselves. Available in stores, online and selected bookstores worldwide.

Bruce of Los Angeles: Rodeo at Acne Paper Palais Royal Seventy-seven vintage photographs from Aletti’s private collection trace Bruce of Los Angeles’ encounters with cowboys and rodeo riders across the American West, revealing a quieter and more observational side of his work. The exhibition accompanies a new edition of Bruce of Los Angeles: Rodeo, edited by Vince Aletti and published by Acne Studios. On view from 3 September to 7 October at Acne Paper Palais Royal, our permanent gallery space in Paris.
