Are these two figures looking at one another? “The lack of a clear relationship between the woman and man makes the painting appear surreal to modern sensibilities, and endlessly beguiling. Why do the figures gaze past one another?” writes Anna-Claire Stinebring, Assistant Curator, European Paintings, in her essay on Fra Filippo Lippi’s “Portrait of a Woman with a Man at a Casement” (ca. 1440). This important painting in The Met collection is the earliest surviving double portrait in Italian art, the first to show sitters in a domestic setting, and the first with a view onto a landscape. What are the flavors of summer? 🍐🍎 With its mountain of fruit and dance of flowers in the background, this sensorial painting from around 1630 is one of Orsola Maddalena Caccia’s most ambitious still lifes.
