Before The Boss of the Plains, the hats most Westerners wore weren’t built for the demands of frontier life. Coonskin caps and rawhide leather hats ran hot, offered little shade from the sun and didn’t hold up in the rain. The Boss of the Plains fixed all that. Instantly iconic, the hat sold far and wide, equally renowned for its quality and practicality. It was lightweight, it provided protection from the elements and had a distinctive style to match its evocative name. In a pinch, it could even be filled with water to give your horse a drink. For those on the frontier, where every day brought new uncertainty, the hat was one thing you could always count on. It became the hat of choice for cowboys, ranchers, lawmen and explorers, worn by stars of the early rodeo circuit and legendary figures like Buffalo Bill Cody and Annie Oakley. In time, it would be known as “the hat that won the West.”

This National Day of the Cowboy, we’re celebrating the people, traditions, and enduring spirit that shaped the American West. In honor of the occasion, Stetson partnered with the Autry Museum of the American West to spotlight its remarkable work preserving Western culture and honoring the cowboys, artists, performers, and pioneers who brought it to life. The museum carries forward the legacy of its founder, Gene Autry—a lifelong Western enthusiast, avid Stetson wearer, and celebrated star who introduced the cowboy spirit to generations around the world. Explore the stories behind a selection of figures, artifacts, and traditions preserved within the museum’s collection—each representing a distinct piece of cowboy history. Before the West became legend, there were those who ventured into its wildest stretches. A scout and trapper, Kit Carson lived a life defined by the vast landscapes and uncertain horizons of the American frontier. His story reflects the independence, resilience and appetite for adventure that would become inseparable from the cowboy spirit. The cowboy’s clothing was shaped by the land itself. Across the Northern Plains, cowboys worked through bitter winters, driving rain and seasons of unrelenting drought. Every layer served a purpose—from heavy coats that held back the cold to the Stetson that offered protection beneath an open sky. Built for necessity, these pieces became enduring symbols of a life lived outdoors, in rhythm with the land. A life measured in mountain passes, open country and trails not yet mapped. Mountain man, trapper and scout Jim Bridger explored some of the most rugged reaches of the American frontier. His knowledge of the land made him a defining figure of the West and an early embodiment of the resourcefulness, independence and restless spirit later associated with the cowboy. A marksman, scout and lawman, Wild Bill Hickok became one of the most legendary figures of the American West. His life unfolded across frontier towns and untamed country, where the line between history and folklore was often as wide as the horizon. The stories that followed transformed Hickok into an enduring symbol of the Western lawman—s

The rhythm of craftsmanship. Behind every hat is a sound most people never hear. In our Garland, Texas factory, we recorded the real noises of hatmaking—hissing steam presses, spinning blockers, brushes gliding over felt—and turned them into a track of their own. This is the Sounds of the Factory. 🎥: Tyler Ellison + Michael Child

MADE IN THE U.S.A. From John B. Stetson’s early days as an adventurer and entrepreneur to the Stetson of today, the story of our brand has been woven into the story of America for 160 years and counting. As we celebrate our country’s 250th birthday, we tip our hats to the those who built this great nation, and to those who continue to shape it. We tip our hats to all who have served this country in uniform, and honor those who gave their lives for our freedom. We tip our hats to the founders, whose revolutionary ideas are as important in 2026 as they were in 1776. We tip our hats to the innovators and entrepreneurs—including our founder, John B. Stetson, whose commitment to quality and belief in raising up others has inspired us since 1865. We tip our hats to the laborers and craftspeople, including the men and women at our factory in Garland, Texas, whose passion and dedication carry forward a 160-year-old legacy of American quality. We tip our hats to all the cowboys and cowgirls, who carry the unwritten codes and embody the character of the West. We tip our hats to the artists and musicians, who have captured our imaginations, challenged our perspectives, and soundtracked our most memorable moments. We tip our hats to the rebels, outlaws, and originals who remind us that the American spirit will never fully be tamed. We tip our hats to our community—to everyone who wears a Stetson with pride and makes it uniquely their own. And finally, we tip our hats to the future generations of trailblazers and torchbearers, who will shape the next 250 years of the great American story. #america250
