Behind the Design: The light fixtures we chose for our 1910 Hometown Restoration While restoring the Caroline Street house (a Sears Roebuck Catalogue Kit home we’ve lovingly named our “Hometown Restoration” project), I knew I needed to make an impact by sourcing light fixtures that spoke to the period of the home. I partnered with @shadesoflight to secure two of these fixtures as gifts to help me stretch my renovation budget, and ended up purchasing even more after falling in love with their design-forward lighting options offered at prices my renovation budget could afford. Shades of Light carries a vast array of in-stock, gorgeous lighting styles, so it made it super easy for me to make quick decisions as we worked to restore this 1910 home and put it back on the market so it could find its new family. The door with the built-in antique mirror was originally inside the bathroom as the door to a built-in linen closet. When I reconfigured the bathroom, I added vanity storage and a cute little linen cabinet (not visible from this angle). This allowed me the opportunity to repurpose the door as a bedroom-facing dressing mirror, doubling as a French-door entry to the bathroom directly off the first floor primary bedroom. I’m excited about the movement away from overly “perfect” interiors and toward spaces with personality, warmth, and individuality. The lighting in a home can determine whether a space feels warm or cold, comforting or chaotic. You would think it’s all about the plushness of the sofa or the busyness of the curtains—but something I see homeowners overlook again and again is just how important lighting really is. Not only the temperature of the light, but the design of the fixture itself. I love thinking of lighting as jewelry. Jewelry is meant to accent your wardrobe—and you. It isn’t intended to steal the show. It’s there to add that little something special. And choosing lighting can be…complicated. For this space, I needed to straddle the line between masculine and feminine because this dressing room was designed for both my partner and me. As much as I wanted to lean into something delicate and feminine, the room needed that counterbalance. This is where I find myself coming back to Shades of Light. They have such a range that I can almost always find something that fits the picture in my head. Take this black scalloped sconce. The dark shade gives it a more masculine presence, while the gold lining and scalloped edge soften it with just the right amount of femininity. Over the dressing island, I chose a natural-fiber fixture knowing I’d likely bring jute into the room elsewhere. It adds a casual, textural counterbalance to the formality of the sconces and chandelier. And now…can we talk about that chandelier?! It has my heart. Its beautiful aged, almost gold-leaf patina feels right at home among the historic elements of my house, while its botanical shape brings a little old-world charm. So if you’re planning a lighting scheme or simply replacing one tired fixture, remember the jewelry rule: Lighting doesn’t have to be the whole outfit. It just needs to be the thing that makes the outfit.
