InstagramThere's no one-size-fits-all when it comes to sodium intake. The standard sodium recommendation is built for the average person. You aren't average. A few factors that change the equation: ⚡ Your genetics (how salty your sweat is) ⚡ Your unique sweat rate ⚡ Your job or physical activity ⚡ Your diet ⚡ Your climate (heat, humidity, altitude) ⚡ Your health history or medical conditions ⚡ Your heat acclimation (changes sweat rate and sodium concentration over time) Swipe to see some of the factors that can push your sodium needs above that average recommendation. i used to think hitting a wall mid run meant I just wasn’t fit enough yet. so i’d push harder… and still feel the same drop off. what i didn’t realize was how much electrolytes (especially sodium) play a role when you’re sweating a lot. for the past couple of years i’ve been using LMNT daily (been loving the lemonade salt flavor lately), usually before longer runs or after tougher efforts. it’s a zero-sugar drink mix with electrolytes, and for me it has helped make my runs feel a lot more consistent. if you’ve experienced that same kind of mid run crash, it might be worth paying attention to. #ad #drinkLMNT #StaySalty @drinklmnt

Early mornings, dad duties, client check-ins, workouts, content, business calls… then doing it all again the next day. 💪🏾⚡️ As a dad and business owner, I’ve learned real quick that if I don’t take care of my body first thing in the morning, I feel it the rest of the day. Hydration has become a non-negotiable part of my routine. Before the coffee, before the workout, before the chaos starts — I make sure I’m hydrated so I can perform at my best for my family, my business, and myself. Especially training in this Florida heat, adding @drinklmnt to my mornings has honestly helped me stay energized, locked in, and ready to attack the day. 🧂🔥 Being fit as a dad isn’t just about aesthetics anymore… it’s about having the energy to show up every single day. #drinklmnt #staysalty #FitDad #DadLife

okay can we talk about the fact that i genuinely didn’t know i was walking around dehydrated until i started using @drinklmnt a few years ago 🥲 like i drink water all day and still felt off, foggy, low energy, the works turns out it’s not just water you need, it’s the electrolytes (hi sodium, magnesium, potassium 👋). once i started drinking lmnt in the mornings and before workouts the difference was actually crazy. more energy, no afternoon slump, and my workouts hit different in this hawaii heat ☀️ zero sugar, no weird artificial stuff, just the good stuff your body actually needs. citrus salt is my fav rn but watermelon is a close second 🍉 if you’ve been chugging water and still feel like something’s missing, this is your sign ✨ #LMNT #DrinkLMNT #ElectrolyteDrink #HealthyHydration #HydrationStation

Ultramarathon athlete and LMNT partner Zach Bitter explains how he trains, hydrates, and prepares for racing in extreme heat — including the hydration mistake that nearly ended his Western States 100. He covers how heat and dehydration affect performance, why sodium needs can vary dramatically between athletes, and how he uses sweat testing and passive heat exposure to personalize his approach. In this video, Zach covers: * How dehydration makes the same running pace feel harder * Why sodium helps maintain blood volume during prolonged exercise * Early signs your hydration strategy may be falling short * The electrolyte mistake that nearly ended his Western States 100 * How sauna sessions can support heat adaptation without sacrificing training quality * How sweat testing can help personalize fluid and electrolyte intake * Why sweat electrolyte losses vary dramatically from person to person * How tracking your response can help dial in a hydration strategy over time ⚡ Try LMNT: https://drinklmnt.com/ Learn more: ⚡ How to build your sodium protocol for endurance running: https://science.drinklmnt.com/electrolytes/how-to-build-sodium-protocol-endurance-running ⚡ How to preven heat exhaustion: A science-backed guide: https://science.drinklmnt.com/did-you-know/how-to-prevent-heat-exhaustion ⚡ Heat acclimiation: 6 benefits and how to get them: https://science.drinklmnt.com/did-you-know/heat-acclimation ⚡ When to worry about leg cramps: https://science.drinklmnt.com/electrolytes/when-to-worry-about-leg-cramps

Water isn't enough. American 100-mile record holder @zbitter learned this the hard way during the 2018 Western States 100. He threw back water steadily through the race but he still nearly passed out at the finish line. https://t.co/QPBZFT9p0M

Sodium-containing foods and sodium itself? Two very different things. Sodium is an essential electrolyte. ⚡ It regulates fluid balance. ⚡ It keeps nerves firing and muscles contracting. ⚡ You cannot live without it. In most ultra-processed foods, sodium shows up bundled with refined carbs, added sugars, and industrial fats. And for many folks, THAT'S the problem. The combination as a whole can interfere with satiety and drive overconsumption. Case in point: If you remove sodium from a bag of chips, it doesn't magically make it a health food. If you're metabolically healthy and eating mostly whole foods, salt restriction generally isn't something you need to obsess over. Healthy kidneys are remarkably good at regulating sodium balance.

Caffeine and blood sugar are two sides of the same story. Dose, timing, and what you eat with it all shape the response. ⚡ At the typical doses delivered by a grande size coffee or a strong pre-workout, caffeine reduces insulin sensitivity short-term. (PMID: 28031026) ⚡ It also elevates cortisol (PMID: 16204431), which promotes glucose release from the liver. (PMID: 26215992) ⚡ Pair coffee with a high-glycemic breakfast (like cereal) and your blood sugar's total post-meal spike is nearly 2.5× bigger than with decaf. (PMID: 18469247) A smarter play: ~50 mg every couple hours up to 400 mg or your personal threshold. That’s how to boost alertness, lift mood, and reduce fatigue without the jitters, sleep problems, or blood sugar disruption that can come with larger doses. Stay Salty ⚡

@zachbitter knows exactly how much sodium he loses per liter of sweat: 614 mg. Your sweat rate might be close to Zach’s... or it could be radically different. One study of 157 marathoners found more than a 13-fold difference in sweat sodium between the lowest and highest sweaters. Some lost only 500 mg per liter. Others lost over 1,600 mg. (PMID: 27478425) That range is huge and exactly why a fixed number doesn't work for everyone (in almost any context). You don't necessarily need a lab test to figure out if you're a salty sweater — there will be signs: 🧂 White salt stains on your clothes or gear 👅 A salty taste on your skin after a sweat session 😖 Stinging eyes when sweat runs into them 🦵 Cramping that shows up late in long or hot efforts Try different electrolyte-to-water ratios on your next few long runs and pay attention to how you feel. You feel the difference when you get it right. Stay Salty ⚡

Nominate an Industrial Athlete and we'll send them free LMNT. Link in bio. Rope access technician @geminiropes spends his workday hundreds of feet up, inspecting bridges, wind turbines, and skyscrapers. At those heights, he faces plenty of dangers he can’t control. One hazard he can control? Dehydration. Long, hot shifts are sweaty. Fluid and sodium can be lost faster than they’re replaced. When levels drop, alertness and judgment can slip, too. Staying hydrated (and the LMNT Give A Salt program) helps Industrial Athletes like @geminiropes stay sharp — so they can stay safe. Nominations are due by 11:59 pm ET on August 10. Stay Salty ⚡️
