#backcountrypartner Before you ask, Roo is safe, and she loves this. She’s wearing a bomber @ruffwear harness, and I’m in a @backcountry sun hoodie It’s become a bit of a ritual for Roo and I to hike PC Hill at the end of the day. It’s a local spot that’s also known for evening sledders in the paragliding community. (An evening sledder is when you fly either a speed wing or a paraglider from the top of the hill straight to the bottom, with no intention of staying up for long. It’s just a way to have a quick, easy flight back down to the parking lot at the end of the day.) Roo is the best adventure dog I’ve had, my soul dog if you will... As A full-blown mutt, she seems to have a sixth sense about how to act in the wild. Her favorite way to descend is usually to chase me down the mountain, tearing down the hillside below me howling and barking while I fly above her. But I can’t always let her do that. Every once in a while, she seems genuinely excited to strap in and go for a flight herself. When she sees the harness she knows what’s happening, and I let her choose if she wants to fly. For Roo, it’s about hanging with dad, for me, this is about training her, so that maybe someday we can hike a bigger mountain together and fly down as a team. So far, I think she’s happier on the ground. In the air, I wrap my legs around her to take a little weight off the harness to keep her comfortable and let her know I’ve got her. She seems to love the view. It’s almost like she’s scouting out places to go look for squirrels once we land. When we’re back on the ground she has the same contagious energy of a human who just flew for their first time, thrilled to be on the ground, but so excited to have gotten to fly! I’ll keep letting her choose, and hopefully one day maybe she and I can hike and fly back down from Timpanogos or another big peak nearby.

It was amazing to witness the riding at the zinkinvitational . Recently, we were reminded to reach out to Eric (Mayumi’s dad) and Mayumi Wakefield to hear their reflections on the experience. Eric: “The day at the Pyramid Mountain zone is probably the part of the weekend that stands out most to me. We left before sunrise and spent the entire day in this incredible desert landscape. There were no perfectly shaped jumps or clearly marked trails. The riders had to look at the mountain, imagine a line, and then figure out whether they could actually ride it. As a parent, it was both amazing and a little intimidating to watch. Mayumi was surrounded by some of the most experienced freeriders in the world, but she was still responsible for making her own decisions. Nobody could tell her exactly what a line would feel like once she dropped in, and I could offer her little guidance as I stood there beside her. What made me proud was not simply what she rode. It was the way she approached the terrain. She took her time, watched the other riders, studied the consequences, and made decisions based on what felt right for her. She was not riding to prove that she was fearless. She was learning to trust her instincts while also respecting the mountain and the consequences. There was something powerful about watching a young woman stand in that environment and realize that she belonged there. She did not need to ride every line or be the boldest person on the mountain. She simply needed to be herself, make good decisions, and take the opportunities that felt right. That day reminded me that freeride is about much more than going big. It is about creativity, judgment, confidence, and knowing when to push yourself. Watching Mayumi continue to develop those qualities was one of the most meaningful parts of the entire weekend.” Mayumi: “Always keep it fun and don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone progresses at their own pace, so believe in yourself and focus on your own journey. Make smart decisions and don’t rush your progress. Success takes time, so be patient and enjoy the process. Most importantly, keep pushing to be better every day and have fun with i

Stoked to announce that I'll be working with @backcountry as an Athlete Partner. I worked there years ago and it's been really sick to come full circle with them 🔄 I've been taking it easy this summer, leaning a little more into being a multiport athlete, so I've had to expand my wardrobe a bit. Thank you Backcountry for the hook up, especially with my first MTB kit!! #backcountrypartner #backcountry
