In 2012, a single lightning strike sparked the Duck Lake Fire in Michigan, and over the next three days, the flames consumed more than 21,000 acres of largely jack pine forest. Four years later, we began restoring part of the Lake Superior State Forest with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, planting 171,000 jack pine trees across the fire-affected area. Those trees are now helping rebuild more than a forest. As the jack pines grow and their crowns come together, they're providing cover for deer and moose and creating nesting and feeding habitat for wildlife, including sharp-tailed grouse and sandhill cranes. The growing forest is also playing an important role in conserving the federally endangered Kirtland’s warbler, which relies on young jack pine forests for nesting habitat. And the difference is hard to miss. What was once a landscape recovering from fire is now growing into a forest that will provide habitat, cover and food for wildlife for years to come.

It was covered by rubble from the surrounding buildings. Severely burned, limbs broken and destroyed. Reduced to an 8-foot stump. A Callery pear tree was found by a clean-up crew weeks after the 9/11 attack. The only sign of life was a single branch with green leaves poking out of the debris, often a dying tree's last push to survive. The tree was moved to a nursery in the Bronx. After more than nine years under the watchful care of arborists and botanists, the tree flourished to about 30 feet tall with beautiful blooms. It was replanted on the 9/11 Memorial Plaza and named the Survivor Tree. It's become a symbol of strength and resilience. Of healing and hope. In 2024, Publix expanded on its long-standing collaboration with the Arbor Day Foundation through the addition of a simple register campaign – turning everyday shopping into collective conservation for millions of customers. Together, Publix and its shoppers have helped plant more than 2.1 million trees in just three years, with another 400,000 to be planted by the end of 2026. These trees are restoring forests, protecting water supplies, and helping slow the changing climate in communities across the Southeast. This partnership is proof that when businesses are bold enough to believe, everyday actions can grow lasting impact.

In Medellín, Colombia, the Comfama La Estrella Recreational Park is being transformed into a thriving urban forest. This April, 100 native trees were planted to help make that vision a reality.​ The park sits within a landscape connected to the La Concha stream and El Romeral basin, and its growing forest will help provide habitat for wildlife, regulate water and improve air quality.​ These urban trees are building a more connected, resilient ecosystem — right in the middle of a city.​

Ready, set, find a tree. 🌳   When put to the test, tree shade was the clear winner as the coolest spot in spot in town. While exposed surfaces climbed as high as 143.9°F, shaded grass beneath the trees measured just 86°F.   Concrete, pavement, and buildings absorb and hold the sun’s energy, causing areas with fewer trees to heat up faster and stay hotter longer. There are many types of fig trees, but one in particular, Ficus wakefieldii has a rare biological superpower: they turn atmospheric carbon dioxide into solid stone.​ The tree transforms absorbed CO2 into internal mineral crystals, which soil bacteria then convert into permanent limestone deep underground. ​ Nature never stops innovating.
