It’s been a scramble after our website overhaul to get all of our holiday season products live and available for preorder. One item that we particularly want to get the word out about is the Heirloom Apple gift boxes that we’re offering with the help of James Wargo just down the road from us in Southbury, CT. Jim and his team at Hidden Gem grow nearly 40 varieties, and our Heirloom gift boxes includes Ashmead’s Kernel, Esopus Spitzenburg, Hudson’s Golden Gem, Northern Spy, Cox Orange Pippin, and Baldwin. You won’t find any of these at the grocery store and it’s really fun (and delicious) to get a sense for how diverse the domesticated apple has been over its long history. We’ll begin shipping gift boxes in mid-November but they’re available in limited quantities and it’s not a bad idea to get yours ordered now. ps - there’s a Baker’s Apples collection in the making too, shippable in time for Thanksgiving. It’s so fun to have a big floral explosion at the tail end of the season - a cheerful bookend to spring when it’s a thrill to see daffodils and tulips again. We’re having a Dahlia open house of sorts on the 26th - from 10am to 2pm we’ll be standing by at our Dahlia trial patch to answer questions, compare notes, scheme about next year, etc. We have 150+ varieties planted out and the display is more extravagant every day. Hope to see you out there!

‘Cafe au Lait Twist’. I don’t want to get crosswise with Big Dahlia (or you!) but my child of the ‘80s mind goes right to New Coke. Regardless, come see our Dahlia patch! We have more than 150 varieties planted out, 800+ plants in total. This time last year we were in the midst of a hot and dry stretch that lasted all fall. This summer has been abnormally wet, including some violent storms that caused flash flooding and significant damage in some areas. We’ve been very lucky, with no direct hits from storms, and the gardens are looking very lush. I do need to have a chat with the Tuteurs Standing Straight Department however. Our store and gardens remain open from 9-5 Thursdays through Mondays (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays) and we hope you can come by for a stroll! Bulbs are arriving shortly and will be stocked in asap - please call before traveling if you’re looking for something specific.
