‘Cafe au Lait Twist’. I don’t want to get crosswise with Big Dahlia (or you!) but my child of the ‘80s mind goes right to New Coke. Regardless, come see our Dahlia patch! We have more than 150 varieties planted out, 800+ plants in total. This time last year we were in the midst of a hot and dry stretch that lasted all fall. This summer has been abnormally wet, including some violent storms that caused flash flooding and significant damage in some areas. We’ve been very lucky, with no direct hits from storms, and the gardens are looking very lush. I do need to have a chat with the Tuteurs Standing Straight Department however. Our store and gardens remain open from 9-5 Thursdays through Mondays (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays) and we hope you can come by for a stroll! Bulbs are arriving shortly and will be stocked in asap - please call before traveling if you’re looking for something specific.

Straight from Dr. Seuss’s garden it’s Eucomis comosa ‘Johannesburg’. Commonly referred to as Pineapple Lilies, these aren’t reliably hardy for us in CT so we’ll dig them at the end of the season as we would a Canna bulb or a Dahlia tuber that we want to hang on to for next year. Eucomis are late summer bloomers so patience is required; it’s fun to have something so dramatic just coming on at this stage of the season.

Friday afternoon scenes for your consideration: - Tomato ‘Tonatico’ (photos 1, 2) has quickly become a staff favorite. It’s intriguing how strongly Echinacea has taken hold along the crown of this field at the nursery. It’s an artifact, we think, of an abandoned road bed some feet down that offers better drainage and reduced fertility as compared to the rest of the field where the pasture grasses are thoroughly dominant.
