PinterestFriday afternoon scenes for your consideration: - Tomato ‘Tonatico’ (photos 1, 2) has quickly become a staff favorite. Not a ‘Sungold’ Brix bomb but plenty sweet, very richly flavored, and an excellent producer on a manageably sized plant. - Aster Azumi XL Pink (photo 3) is a China Aster (Callistephus chinensis) with flower power to spare; these come on as the days get shorter and stems are unusually long-lasting in a vase. - Photo 4 is Euphorbia marginata (maybe ‘Kilimanjaro’), aka Sno...

Passiflora ‘Betty Myles Young’ - sure, it’s a flower, but might it also be a sea creature? Can we really know for sure? Thoughts?

I’m reluctant to even say it but there’s a distinct touch of you-know-what in the air tonight after the rain blew through. The panicle Hydrangeas know it - this is Strawberry Sundae looking superb with color frothing all around.

It’s intriguing how strongly Echinacea has taken hold along the crown of this field at the nursery. It’s an artifact, we think, of an abandoned road bed some feet down that offers better drainage and reduced fertility as compared to the rest of the field where the pasture grasses are thoroughly dominant.

A last look at the #begonia house for this season. Probably the last look. Maybe. 🤷♂️.

When we suggest Hosta for shady spots, we often hear something to the effect of “right, right, what else you got”. And there indeed tons of other cards to play in the shade. But, for the record, we love Hostas and will keep recommending them to anyone who will listen. This is a small sample of the many varieties planted around the nursery but it demonstrates the variety of colors, textures, and sizes on offer. 1. ‘Guacamole’ 2. ‘Antioch’ 3. ‘Final Summation’ 4. ‘Fragrant Bouquet’ (yes, it is) 5. ‘Patriot’ 6. ‘June’ 7. ‘Krossa Regal’

We’re aware that #daylilies are not everyone’s cup of tea but, for the record, they are: - long lived - long flowering - very adaptable and easy care And there are so many colors and interesting flower forms to choose from. In short, there’s a lot to like about Daylilies and if you haven’t tried ‘em, you really ought to!

Tonight’s episode of “Panning Across Umbels” features Ammi ‘Casablanca’ (syn. ‘Casablanca White’?), a big bushy form with large, domed flowers over the fine foliage. A good bit of floral tape at the base to keep everything upright but that aside we’re enjoying this one quite a bit.

There are certainly plants that don’t agree with our soils and that we do best with in the greenhouse (or not at all) but Daylilies are not one of them. Lots of lovely varieties in the fields and gardens at the moment. The last shot is a planting of our Crescendo Daylily collection - 25 different varieties that demonstrate the genus’s adaptability and diversity of color and form. These plants will thrive just about anywhere you put them and look terrific all summer.

The wild fire smoke (and the Echinops) made for a peculiar atmosphere in the gardens today. Lots of big summer colors - Daylilies, Rudbeckia, Monarda, and lots more. We’ve flipped, by the way, to our summer hours - our store is now closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays but we welcome garden strollers from 9 to 5 any day.

Just a quick clip of a pretty plant that you may not be familiar with. Daucus ‘Dara’ is a cultivar of the familiar Queen Anne’s lace with flower heads that age to lovely pink and even burgundy tones. It’s a self-sower but not to the point of being a bother - we’re generally happy to come across it. That’s Salvia yangii ‘Blue Jean Baby’ (formerly classified as Perovskia atriplicifolia) it’s dancing with.
