Farm Friday: Polar Bear Grow-Out Before we make a new lot of seed available to you, we plant a sample on our Research Farm to verify that the plants and fruit look and perform as expected, from sowing through harvest (e.g., correct shape, size, color, vine length, etc.). For this recent lot of Polar Bear, a cultivar from our breeding program, the grow-out passed with flying colors: nothing but wonderfully white, extra-large pumpkins! In this clip, our team is lining up the fruit post-harvest to evaluate the results. It’s a critical quality-control step that helps us make sure the seed we send you is true to type and ready to grow. 𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺: 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗼-𝗧𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 We sowed this buckwheat cover crop in one of our fallow fields during the summer as a fast-growing green manure. We'll terminate it with a roller crimper before seed forms, which keeps the crop residue intact and protects the soil. Next, we'll drill our winter rye directly into it, leaving the soil undisturbed. Buckwheat is widely grown as a grain crop, bee pasture, soil-improving cover crop, and as wildlife cover. Its rapid, dense growth chokes out weeds, and it is great for crop-free fields in rotation with vegetables. Buckwheat is also often grown to attract beneficial insects and as pasture for honey bees. 𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗱 🍅 What happens to a tomato on our Research Farm after it’s harvested for seed? The short answer is: a lot!   Here’s a peek behind the scenes (step 2 is pictured): 𝟭. 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 Ripe tomatoes are harvested from the field and brought to our seed shop. 𝟮. 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 A Millet Wet Seed Separator breaks down the fruit and separates the seeds from the pulp. 𝟯. 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 The seeds and pulp ferment for 1–2 days. This important step removes a natural germination-inhibiting compound from the seed coating, helping ensure reliable germination. 𝟰. 𝗦𝗹𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗲 Water is added, and the mixture is washed repeatedly until the pulp is gone and only clean seeds remain. 𝟱. 𝗗𝗿𝘆 & 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 The seeds are dried thoroughly, then cleaned to remove chaff and undersized seeds. 𝟲. 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗲 & 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲 We package the finished seed and store it in our seed cooler.
