Today is Farmworker Appreciation Day! We’re grateful for the people whose knowledge, skill, and hard work make agriculture possible. From planting and cultivating to harvesting and packing, farmworkers do the essential work that brings food from fields to tables. And so much of that work happens out of sight.   At Johnny’s, we’re especially grateful for our phenomenal Farm Crew. Across 11 farm sites and more than 30 miles of trial beds, they care for thousands of seed varieties throughout the growing season. They work in all kinds of weather and conditions, bringing experience and close attention to every trial. On the Farm: Sunflower Trials 🌻 Here comes the sun! It’s National Sunflower Day, and our sunflower trials are in full bloom (and we’re doing our best to keep up). Named for its clean, almost neutral color palette, fresh-cut blooms are oatmeal in color with a pale pink or pale peach cast. As the blooms age, they display more pink and peach hues. Before, during, and after cover crop termination. These are some shots from last year's no-till brassica trials at our Research Farm. We started by planting a cover crop of 'Spring Green Manure Mix' in early May. About two months later, we terminated the cover crop by crimping and then tarping it with a silage tarp. When we removed the tarp, we revealed a beautiful cover crop residue. We transplanted our seedlings into the residue with a water wheel transplanter in late July. On the Farm: Field Forum This week, members of our Research Team welcomed fellow employee-owners to a two-part educational field forum at the farm, featuring summer squash & container strawberries.   Our summer squash Product Manager, Nate, and trial technician, Matt, reviewed our current assortment, highlighting key differences between varieties and across types. We walked the trial to observe and discuss plant habit and compare (and feel) degrees of spinelessness between varieties.   Next, we met up with strawberry Product Manager Ben and Crop Specialist Daniel at our container strawberry trial. Once there, we reviewed our current offering of varieties and types to compare/contrast their similarities and differences.
