𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗱 🍅 What happens to a tomato on our Research Farm after it’s harvested for seed? The short answer is: a lot!   Here’s a peek behind the scenes (step 2 is pictured): 𝟭. 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 Ripe tomatoes are harvested from the field and brought to our seed shop. 𝟮. 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 A Millet Wet Seed Separator breaks down the fruit and separates the seeds from the pulp. 𝟯. 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 The seeds and pulp ferment for 1–2 days. This important step removes a natural germination-inhibiting compound from the seed coating, helping ensure reliable germination. 𝟰. 𝗦𝗹𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗲 Water is added, and the mixture is washed repeatedly until the pulp is gone and only clean seeds remain. 𝟱. 𝗗𝗿𝘆 & 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 The seeds are dried thoroughly, then cleaned to remove chaff and undersized seeds. 𝟲. 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗲 & 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲 We package the finished seed and store it in our seed cooler. On the Farm: No-Till Trials Our no-till trials continue at the Research Farm with our collard and kale fall trial.   In these pictures, you can see: • A 2-month-old pea and oat cover crop being crimped/terminated. • We tarped the plot to complete the termination and prepare the bed by letting it sit for 2 weeks. • We removed the tarp to expose the bed and cover crop residue • Next, we planted starts with a waterwheel transplanter. • A happy crew after a job well done   Now the real test begins: how will the collards and kale establish in the residue, and how well will the system manage weeds throughout the fall?
