Gibson Director of Brand Experience Mark Agnesi talks with Guitar Center CEO Gabe Dalporto about enthusiastically looking through the Musician’s Friend catalog when he was ten years old, his experiences working with vintage instruments at Norman’s Rare Guitars and how Gibson Custom Shop replicas are getting more and more like vintage originals. “Giving people access to guitars is really important,” says Agnesi, explaining why visiting guitar stores remains one of the best ways for musicians to compare guitars that simply can't be replicated online. “You’ve got to play one. What’s the point of having physical retail stores if everything is moving online? You have to invite people in to experience actually playing what they could have bought online. I think it’s extremely valuable to do that, and that can’t get lost. We can’t lose brick and mortar retail.” In this episode: • Discover Agnesi’s “Guitar Center story” about buying a Telecaster inspired by Brent Mason, except he got the color wrong • See why Agnesi still considers physical stores essential experiences • Hear Agnesi reveal what Norm Harris of Norman’s Rare Guitars says you’re actually paying for when you buy a vintage guitar • Learn how closely Gibson Custom Shop recreations match vintage originals. Hear Joe Bonamassa demonstrate why the Fender Telecaster is the perfect “utility plank.” The guitarist and guitar collector bought this vintage 1968 Fender Telecaster 15 years ago. But instead of being equipped with its original single-coil pickups, it was modded with two Gibson PAF humbuckers and 500k pots, rather than the Tele-standard 250k audio taper. “This is basically a Gibson Les Paul jammed into a Fender Telecaster,” says Bonamassa, “but sometimes a hybrid turns out to be the best. When I first plugged it in, it was magic. Even today, I’ll bring it out and everyone kind of discounts it because it looks weird. Then, they hear it, and they’re like, ‘That’s actually really good.’ In this video: • Hear the tone of a Fender Telecaster loaded with Gibson PAF humbuckers • Find out why Bonamassa believes already-modded Telecasters can be hidden gems • Discover why this humbucker-equipped Tele is one of Bonamassa’s secret weapons What is the best pickup swap you’ve ever done on one of your guitars?
