30 years ago, Carlos walked into a McDonald’s to drop his cousin off for work and walked out with Ky’s pager number. He made her laugh and she agreed to a date. Before long they were dating and three years later, he proposed. They married at the courthouse, just the two of them starting a life together. That life brought unimaginable loss, a lifelong diagnosis of Cowden syndrome, and a family built through foster care and adoption, four kids who are nearly grown now. More recently, it brought a breast cancer diagnosis and surgeries Ky is still recovering from. Through every bit of it, Carlos never left her side. He always dreamed of giving Ky the wedding day she never had. Life kept pushing it down the road, until our Kansas City community stepped in and made sure “someday” finally came. To every vendor who donated their time, talent and heart to this celebration: thank you. You gave Ky and Carlos a day that honored 30 years of love in a way words never could. After seven years as a single mom, Laura wasn’t sure she’d ever find love again. Alex was simply hoping to meet someone special. Michael and Bryan met in Washington during the COVID-19 pandemic. Michael had been battling cancer on and off for nearly eight years, and like so many others, both he and Bryan found themselves feeling lonely and isolated. They turned to online dating in hopes of finding companionship, talked for weeks, and finally met for an outdoor kayaking date. They instantly connected and before long, knew they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. Michael was first diagnosed with the rare bone cancer Ewing sarcoma at just 15 years old. He underwent treatment at Seattle Children’s Hospital and believed he had beaten the disease. Sadly, it returned during high school, requiring another grueling round of treatment and a month-long hospital stay. It relapsed again after he and Bryan had started dating, and today Michael continues treatment every three weeks. With each recurrence, the disease becomes more difficult to treat, making his strength and resilience all the more remarkable. We were honored to grant their wish for a beautiful wedding celebration, and none of it would have been possible without our incredible Wish Granters.
