New CMPD recruits, day three: suits off, uniforms on at their local GALLS store, learning how to wear something they've never worn before—tucked, hemmed, squared away, piece by piece. It's a small moment most people never see. But it's the first time these recruits look like the officers their community will come to know. Open to young officers under 30 years old, this award recognizes the incredible things young officers do that most people never hear about. Last year's finalists included a trooper who fought off an armed gunman in a courthouse, an officer who returned to duty after being shot twice in the line of duty, and a warden who pulled people out of historic flooding.
