The mosaic floor of Aesop Shenzhen could not have existed without the research of Kian Hiu Lan Yam and her team at MLKK. Guided by locals, they sourced discarded stone from a nearby quarry. In their workshop, the architects tested blend after blend of branches and stone with different chemical mixes. This experimentation led to a hybrid technique—the birth of an unprecedented craft. The final surface combines terrazzo with a resin finish, branches cast in custom moulds and seamlessly integrated with rock, all of which was later poured on site.
